Sunset

Sunset

I've always loved sunsets, then one day my father told me "son for every sunset remember there is a sunrise". Seems simple but sunrises in the summer in Jackson come real early. My father was right, a sunrise in Jackson Hole is something worth losing sleep over, and a sunset is a great way to finish out the day.

For sunsets I love to use the internet webcams to track the cloud cover and if it is building up to be worth the drive. As the summer goes along the sun begins setting further north, which often makes us drive to spot further north to get the sun behind the grand clump of mountains. Stuff in the sky, clouds, dust from Idaho tater harvesting or smoke from forest fires is what makes sunsets really reach their potential.

Depending on the clouds placement, it usually dictates the location I choose. Clouds in Idaho are best shot from a vantage point further east from the range, whereas if the clouds are sitting on the Tetons or high above I find a place with water and shoot more panoramic type closer to the range. This photograph was shot during hazy day with wildfire smoke on the Idaho side shot from the higher vantage point at the Wedding Tree. Even if you don't get a shot, it's nice to know you are chasing the beauty of a day coming to a close.
